A BRIEF LIFE SKETCH OF 10th IMAM A.S.
Name :
Ali ibn Mohammad – the 10th Holy Imam
Titles :
an-Naqi, al-Hadi
Agnomen :
Abul-Hasan
Father :
Imam Muhammad at-Taqi al-Jawwad(a.s.) – the 9th Holy Imam
Mother :
Bibi Sumanah

In Suryah ( in the environs of Medina ) , on Friday , 2nd (or 5th) Rajab, 214 AH (817 AD)
Death :
In Samarrah at the age of 42 on 3 Rajab 254 AH (868 AD)
Cause of Death/Burial :
Poisoned by al-Mu’tazz, the Abbasid caliph & buried in Samarrah

Initial Period – THE TENTH Holy Imam, like his father, was also elevated to the rank of Imam in his childhood. He was six years old when his father Imam Muhammad al – Jawad(a.s.) died.  After the death of Ma’mun, Mu`tasim succeeded him, and was later followed by the caliph al-Wathiq. In the first five years of the reign of al-Wathiq, Imam Ali al-Hadi (an-Naqi(a.s.) ) lived peacefully.  After al-Wathiq, Mutawakkil came to power.  Being too occupied in State affairs, Mutawakkil did not get any time to harass the Imam and his followers for four years.  But as soon as he freed himself from State affairs, he started to molest the Imam.

Conspiracy – The Holy Imam(a.s.) devoted himself to the sacred mission of preaching in Medina and did thus earn the faith of the people as well as their allegiance and recognition of his great knowledge and attributes.  This reputation of the Imam evoked the jealousy and malice of Mutawakkil against him.  The governor of Medina wrote to Mutawakkil that Imam Ali Naqi(a.s.) had been manoeuvring a coup against the government and a multitude of Shi’ites were pledged to his support.  Although enraged by this news al-Mutawakkil still preferred the diplomacy of not arresting the Holy Imam(a.s.).  Under the garb of pretended respect and love towards the Imam, he planned to put him under life imprisonment after inviting him to his palace.

Munafikat of the Rulers – Prior to his imprisonment, in a series of correspondence with the Imam(a.s.), he expressed the view that he was convinced of all the claims of the Imam(a.s.) and was ready to settle them amicably.  He wrote to the Imam(a.s.) that having been acquainted with his great personality, his matchless knowledge and his peerless attributes, he was impatiently looking forward to the honour of seeing him , and he most cordially invited him to Samarrah.  Although the Imam(a.s.) was well aware of Mutawakkil’s treacherous intentions, he anticipating the fatal consequences of refusing the offer, reluctantly decided to leave Medina .  But when the Imam(a.s.) arrived at Samarrah and al-Mutawakkil was informed about it, he took no notice of the Imam’s arrival. when asked about where the Imam (a.s.) should stay, he ordered that the Imam should be put up in the inn meant for beggars, destitute and homeless people.

Psychological torture – Al – Mutawakkil who was a deadly enemy of the Ahlul-bayt a.s., removed the Imam(a.s.) from this inn and entrusted him to the custody of a stone-hearted brute named Zurafah. But, by the grace of Allah(swt), his (Zurafah’s) enmity was, in a short time, transformed into love and devotion for the Imam(a.s.).  When Mutawakkil learnt about it, he shifted the Imam(a.s.) into the custody of another cruel man called Sa’id . The Imam(a.s.) remained under his strict vigilance for a number of years , during which he was subjected to boundless tortures . But even in this miserable imprisonment  the Imam(a.s.) kept devoting himself at all times to the worship of Allah(swt) .

Imam’s pity & Taqwa – The watchman of the prison used to comment that Imam Ali al-Hadi(a.s.) seemed to be an angel in human garb.  When Fath ibn Khaqan became the vizier of Mutawakkil, he being a Shi`ah could not stand the idea of the Imam’s captivity.  He endeavoured to have him released from imprisonment and arranged for his comfortable residence in a personally purchased house at Samarrah.  Still Mutawakkil could hardly refrain from his antagonism to the Imam(a.s.) and he appointed spies to watch the Imam(a.s.) and his connections.  But through all these attempts,  his hope of creating some fabrication to prove the Imam’s activity against himself could not be realized.

A Historic Incident – In the time of Mutawakkil there was a woman named Zaynab who claimed to be a descendant of Imam Hussain(a.s.).  Mutawakkil sought the confirmation of Zaynab’s claim from the Imam(a.s.) and said:  “That as the beasts are prohibited to eat the flesh of the descendants of Imam Hussain(a.s.) he would throw Zaynab to the beasts and test her claim”.  On hearing this , Zaynab began to tremble and confessed that she was a fake. Mutawakkil then ordered the Imam(a.s.) to be thrown to the beasts to test the claim.  To his great surprise , he witnessed the beasts prostrating their heads before the Imam(a.s.).

Ready to Help his Enemies – Once Mutawakkil happened to suffer from a serious malady which was eventually declared incurable by his physicians.  When the Imam(a.s.) was approached for some remedy, he prescribed an application which resulted in a spontaneous cure.

Enmity of Rulers towards Ahlul Bayt a.s. – Once al-Mutawakkil was informed that the Imam(a.s.) was preparing a revolt against him. Thereupon, he ordered a detachment of the army to launch a raid on the Imam’s residence.  When the soldiers entered his house, they found him sitting on a mat, reciting the Holy Qur’an.

Shahadat of Imam – Not only Mutawakkil, but his successors’ opposition to the Imam(a.s.) was fierce.  After the death of Mutawakkil, Mustansir, Mus’tain and Mu’tazz carried on the same mission of harassment against the family of the Imam. Mu`tazz, understanding the uncontrollable and intense devotion of the people towards the Imam(a.s.) , eventually contrived the Imam’s assassination.  He got him poisoned through an ambassador which resulted in the Imam’s death within a few hours. The martyrdom occurred on 3rd Rajab 254 AH, and his funeral prayer was conducted by his son, Imam Hasan al-Askari(a.s.).  The Imam(a.s.) was only forty-two years old at the time of death. The period of his Imamate was thirty-five years . He is buried in Samarrah, Iraq.

Even today, one could not fail to notice the same pattern of enmity and cruelty towards the Shaiias of Ahlul Bayt a.s

Condolences to all mo’mineen on the shahadat anniversary of our 8th Imam Ali ar-Ridha (A.S.)

13, 11 January, 2013

Name:

Ali

Designation:

8th Imam

Father:

7th Imam Musa Al-Kazim (A.S.)

Mother:

Bibi Sultana / Umul Baneen

Born:

11th Dhu Al Qa’dah 148 AH (765 AD)

Died:

29 Safar 203 AH (818 AD)

Lived:

55 Years

Buried:

Mashhad

Martyred:

Poisoned by Mamoon

Imam Ali ar-Ridha(A.S.) the eighth Holy Imam was poisoned by Mamun, the Abbasid caliph in Sanabad in Toos region(Khurasan,Iran). Imam Ridha (A.S.) attained martyrdom on the last day of the month of Safar 203 A.H./ 818 A.D. and was buried in Sanabad. After the burial of Imam Ali ar-Ridha (A.S.) in this place, Sanabad was soon transformed into a metropolis and the sacred shrine of Imam Ali ar-Ridha(A.S.) in the holy city ofMashhad is also one of the most extensively visited pilgrimage centre in the world.

The time that Imam al-Ridha spent in Mashad were perhaps the most fulfilling as he was given freedom to preach to and teach the masses – obviously within limits set down by the caliphate. The historians narrate numerous incidents of discussions and debates that took place between the Imam and people of other faiths. In one such gathering, one of the prime minister of Mamun, Fadl Ibn Sahl, arranged a conference on religions for which he invited the leaders of different Muslim traditions and scholars of the others faiths – namely the Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians. This was done so that the scholars may hear what the Imam of the Ahlul Bayt had to say about the various traditions and impress them with the abilities and excellences of the Ahlul Bayt (which Mamun also claimed to be from). In addition to clarifying the position of the Prophets, the 8th Imam also elucidated the infallibility of the Prophets – particularly the final Prophet and his legitimate successors – the Imams.

Such forms of dialogue (which are recorded in books such as `Uyoon al-Akhbar al-Ridha’ compiled by the late Shaykh Saduq in Arabic with summaries of these discussions translated and published in English) were so successful that, fearing the increasing influence of the Imam on the people as a whole, Mamun decided to put an end to these just as quick as he had initiated them. Had he only decided to put an end to the debates, it would have been enough, but the ruthless caliph went a step further and ordered for the Imam to be killed – the same method used by all previous rulers and even contemporary rulers when they can not politically silence an individual. Using the traditional method of poison, Mamun ended up silencing the Imam in name, not in spirit, as the teachings of the true members of the Ahlul Bayt were cemented into the hearts and minds of the people of Iran.

The vicious caliph of the time, Ma’mun was scared of the ever-increasing Holy Imam’s (A.S.) popularity. Thus he decided to eliminate the Holy Imam (A.S.).

In 203 A.H./ 818 A.D., Ma’mun first imprisoned Imam Ali ar-Ridha (A.S.) in Sarakhs. Then the Holy Imam (A.S.) was taken to Sanabad and confined in the palace of Humaid bin Qahtabah. During the morning of the last day of the month of Safar 203 A.H./ 818 A.D., the Holy Imam(A.S.) was poisoned by Ma’mun in that palace. The Holy Imam (A.S.) was seized with intensive pain and languor and in the evening of the same day the holy soul of the innocent Holy Imam (A.S.) departed to heaven.

The Holy Imam (A.S.) was buried in the solitude of night at the same place of the palace which His Holiness had prophesied during his first visit to Humaid bin Qahtabah’s palace at Sanabad in 201 A.H. / 817 A.D.

On this tragic and sad occasion we extend our Heartfelt Condolences to all the lovers of Holy Ahlul Bayt(A.S.) and to our present Imam Al-Mahdi (May Allah Hasten His Appearance).

And May Allah bless us all with the honour of the Ziyarat of our beloved 8th Imam Ali Ar-Ridha (A.S.)

The Status of Imam Hussain (AS)

The status of Imam Hussein (Abu-Abdullah) (a.s.) is unparalleled, except by that of his father, mother, brother, and the Imams of his offspring, on all of them be the peace and blessings of Allah. Should a historian make a good research, collecting the stories and traditions concerning Imam Hussein (a.s.), he would certainly end up with the Imam (a.s.) as the top example among the Muslims. He would write a voluminous, great work covering this Imam.

As much as we can, we will delve into the key points which portray the great position of Imam Hussein (a.s.) according to Islamic criteria.

The Glorious Qur’an, the supreme divine document, which falsehood can never reach from before or behind it, expresses in many verses the lofty position Imam Hussein (a.s.) achieved in the sight of Allah, the Exalted. Following are some of these verses:

1. Verse of Purification (Tathir):

“Allah only wishes to keep away uncleanness from you (Household of the Prophet) and purify you thoroughly.”

Holy Qur’an (33:33)

Traditionists say, regarding the reason this verse was revealed, that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) called for a shawl. With it he covered Ali, Fatimah, Hassan and Hussein (a.s.). “O my Lord,” he said, “these are the members of my family. Remove uncleanness from them and purely purify them.” and so this noble verse was revealed on this occasion. It is a testimony by Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, on the purity of the Prophetic house (Ahlul Bait (a.s.)) and their great stature.

2. Verse of Malediction (Mubahala):

“If anyone disputes with you about it (your prophethood) after the knowledge has come to you, say, ‘Come, let us bring our sons and your sons and our women and your women and ourselves and yourselves and pray to Allah to curse the lying party.”

Holy Qur’an (3:61)

The Qur’anic exegesists and scholars say that this noble verse was revealed when the Christians of the city of Najran agreed with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) to pray to Allah to destroy the party which stuck to falsehood. As agreed, and on time, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) went out to the place chosen for the contest. He carried Imam Hussein (a.s.) and took Imam Hassan (a.s.) by the hand. Fatimah followed behind while Imam Ali walked in their wake. “Say ‘Amen’ at the end of my prayer,” the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) told them. But, upon seeing those brilliant faces filled with piety and grandeur, the Christians stopped short of entering the contest. They recognized the Prophet’s authority, and paid the tribute.

The noble verse called Hassan and Hussein “our sons,” mentioned the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), and referred to Ali as “ourselves” and Fatimah as “our women.” She symbolizes the whole of womankind in this verse. Had there been other people who had higher status than these people, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) certainly would have brought them along with him.

3. Verse of Affection (Mawada):

“…say: ‘I do not ask you f or any payment f or my preaching to you, except the love f or my relatives…'”

Holy Qur’an (42:23)

The Qur’anic exegesists state that this verse was revealed concerning Ali, Fatimah, Hassan and Hussein (a.s.).

Jabir bin Abdullah is reported to have said: “A bedouin came to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and said, ‘O Muhammad! introduce me to Islam.’

“‘You should bear witness,’ replied the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) ‘that there is no god but Allah, Who is the only God, Who has no partner whatsoever, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger.’

“‘Do you ask for recompense in return?’ asked the bedouin.

“‘No,’ said the Prophet (s.a.w.), ‘except that you should love the relatives.’

“‘Mine or yours?’ inquired the man.

“‘Mine,’ said the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.).

“‘Hold out your hand,’ said the bedouin. ‘I give you my pledge of allegiance. My Allah curse whoever doesn’t love you or your kindred.’

“‘Amen,’ said the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.).”

It is reported in the Musnad (Book of traditions) of Ahmad bin Hanbal, the two Sahihs (Authentic books of traditions), and the exegesis of al-Tha’alibi and al-Tabarsi, that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, was quoted as saying, “when the verse (say: I do not ask you for any payment for my preaching to you except the love for my relatives) was revealed, Muslims asked the Prophet (s.a.w.), ‘O Messenger of Allah! Who are your kinsfolk whom we should love?! ‘Ali, Fatimah and their two sons,’ answered the Prophet (a.s.).”

Next to the verses of the Glorious Qur’an, we quote certain statements, from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) as additional evidence expressing the lofty position occupied by Imam Hussein (a.s.) in the world of Islam and the Muslim ummah.

1. In the Sahih of al-Tirmidhi, Ya’la bin Murrah is quoted to have said, “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said,

‘Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein. Allah loves whoever loves Hussein. Hussein is a disciple of the disciples.”

2. Salman al-Farsi is reported to have said, “I heard the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.) saying, ‘Hassan and Hussein are my two sons. Whoever loves them then he loves me. And whoever dislikes them then he dislikes me. And whoever dislikes me then Allah dislikes him. And whomever Allah dislikes, He will throw him into hell f ace downward.”‘

3. Al-Bara’ bin Azib is quoted to have said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) carrying Hussein bin Ali (a.s.) on his shoulder. He was saying, ‘O Lord! I do love him so love him.'”

4. Abdullah bin Mas’ood is reported to have said, “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said, concerning Hassan and Hussein, ‘These are my two sons, whoever loves them then he loves me. And whoever dislikes them he dislikes me,”‘

5. Ali bin Hussein (a.s.) said, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather (a.s.), ‘The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) took the arms of Hassan and Hussein and said, ‘Whoever loves me and loves these two and their father, he will certainly be with me on the Day of Judgement.'”

In our latest booklet we referred to the fact that the characters of both Imams Hassan and Hussein (a.s.) have many traits in common. Both of them received their initial stage of training before shouldering the heavy task of propagating and defending the da’wah. Both of them had one and the same education, indoctrination, and spiritual and ideological teachings, under the supervision of their grandfather (s.a.w.), their father and their mother (a.s.).

As a result, the aspects of their characters fused together personifying the message of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, in thought, action and conduct.

In our booklet on Imam Hassan (a.s.), we cited some examples which put his character into perspective. Here, we do the same regarding Imam Hussein (a.s.).

THE GENIUS OF ALI IBN ABI TALIB

15, 27 November, 2012

A man asked Moula Ali (a.s.) in Masjid-e-Kufa,
“What is the distance between me and (pointing towards the sun)
and the sun”.
It is worth mentioning here about the complexity of this question.
This man was an Arab.
And in the Arabic language the numbers or count is limited upto one thousand (1000).
The count in arabic does not exceed 1000.
The answer to the ques! tion this man asked dealt inmillions (distance).

It was like a challenge to Imam Ali (a.s.) to answer him

in a convincing manner without confusing him.

Imam Ali (a.s.) answered :
“If an Arab horse starts walking from here and co! ntinues walking for 500 years, then he (horse) will reach the sun.”

The man got convinced and walked away.

But it is for us now to ponder on what Imam Ali (a.s.) said.

This one sentence of Imam Ali (a.s.) shows and proves the genius that Imam Ali (a.s.) was.

Imam Ali (a.s.) said “If an Arab horse…”,

the average speed of an arab horse is 22 mph (miles per hour).
If a horse runs the full day (24hours) it will cover approximately 520 miles.
This gives us the distance the horse will cover in 24 hrs (one day).

To calculate the distance covered by the horse in one month we multiply it 520 by 29.5 (Taking an average of the number of months in urdu callender.
Assuming that 6 months are of 29 days and 6 months are of 30 days.).

It gives us something around 15,500.

The horse covers 15,500 miles in one month (30 days).

To get the distance that he will trav ! el in one year we multiply it by 12.

Since there are 12 months in a year. It gives you 1,86,000(AMAZING. THIS IS SPEED OF LIGHT IN MILES PER SECOND)

Then multiply 1,86,000 by 500 as the horse should run for 500 years.
It gives you 9,34,00,000 miles.

Now if you ask an astronomer about the distance of sun from the earth
he will tell you that the distance is never constant.

The orbit of the earth is oval in shape.
Sometimes it comes nearer to the sun and on occasions it distances itself from the sun.
When the earth is closest to the sun its distance is 9,10,00,000 miles
and the distance when it is farthest from the sun is 9,48,00,000 miles.
When you take an average on these two distances it comes around 9,30,000 miles.

Imam Ali (a.s.) 1400 years back told us about the distance of theearth from the sun.
